Planning and CostWhen Is the Best Time to Install a Fence in Michigan?

Permit lead times, frozen ground and the spring rush: how to time your fence project.

The best time to install a fence is whenever you’ve planned far enough ahead to have your permit in hand. In Michigan, that usually means starting the process before you actually need the fence. Here’s how to time it.

Work Backward From When You Need It

Most people want the fence up for something specific: a new puppy, summer, a pool season or a new home. Count back from that date:

  1. Estimate and decision. We measure and price the fence. Reviewers mention getting their estimate the next day.
  2. HOA approval, if your subdivision requires it. See the installation prep checklist.
  3. Permit. This step takes the longest. Macomb Township, for example, runs a grade check (about two to three days) and then takes seven to 10 working days to issue the permit.
  4. Utility marking. MISS DIG 811 needs at least three business days’ notice before anyone digs.
  5. Installation. A typical backyard takes a few days of work.

Spring: Plan in Winter

Spring is when most people think about fences, which makes it the busiest time to schedule. If you want a fence in place by early summer, get your estimate and permit application going in late winter.

Summer and Fall

Summer and fall are good times to build. The ground is workable, and stain goes on well in dry weather, which matters for staining a wood fence. Fall is also a good time to replace a fence that won’t survive another winter.

Can You Install a Fence in Winter?

Frozen ground makes digging post holes harder. Whether winter installation makes sense depends on the conditions and the job, so ask when you request your estimate. Winter is a great time to get the estimate, permits and HOA approval done, so you’re first in line when the ground thaws.

Don’t Forget the Permit Expiration Windows

MISS DIG tickets have their own clock: digging must start within 14 days of the ticket’s start date and finish within 21 days, or a new ticket is needed. We handle that timing on our end.

How Long Do Fence Permits Take in Each City?

Permit timing is the part of the schedule you can’t speed up, so it helps to know what each community asks for:

  • Macomb Township: a grade check by the Water Department (about two to three days), then seven to 10 working days to process the permit, plus a final inspection after the build.
  • St. Clair Shores: submit the fence request form with a drawing of the fence location and a description of the fence. The city reviews it and approves or denies it. A post-hole inspection and a final inspection follow.
  • Chesterfield Township: applications are electronic only (since January 2024) and need a mortgage survey or plot plan, the fence size and material, and a copy of your driver’s license.
  • Clay Township: a zoning compliance permit. The Building Department schedules building and zoning inspections Monday through Thursday, roughly 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Details for every city are in our fence permit guide.

Planning Around a New Puppy, Pool or Move-in

  • New puppy: start the estimate as soon as you know the dog is coming. Puppies grow fast, so plan the fence height for the adult dog. See the best fence for dogs.
  • Pool season: pool barriers follow the building code, and Macomb Township asks you to mark pool barriers on the permit plan, so tell us early.
  • New home: check your HOA rules and your survey before closing, if you can, so you can apply for the permit right after you move in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does Fence Installation Take?

A typical backyard fence takes a few days of work once the permit is issued and utilities are marked. Long runs, slopes, several gates or removing an old fence add time. We give you a schedule with your estimate.

Can I Start Building Before the Permit Is Issued?

No. In the communities we serve, the permit comes first. St. Clair Shores, for example, says you may construct your fence once you have your fence permit.

Does Weather Delay Fence Installation?

Heavy rain and frozen ground can push back digging. Staining waits for dry weather. We plan around the forecast and keep you posted.
